And I say unto you, whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
His disciples say unit him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. But he (Jesus) said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. for there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it. (Matthew 19:9 -12) (KJV).
If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters - yes, even his own life- he cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:26).
Those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this. (1 Corinthians 7:28).
What the Qur'an Says…
But monasticism' they invented. We ordained it not, but (they sought it) only to please Allah therewith and they did not observe it with the right observance. So We gave those among them who believed, their reward; but many of them are rebellious transgressors. (Qur'an, 57: 27).
And among His signs is this, that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you may find rest in them, and He has put between you love and mercy. Verily, in that are indeed signs for people who reflect. (Qur'an, 30:21)
Commentary…
The Bible recommends celibacy and says that marriage brings many troubles in this life. It also says that Prophet Jesus (pbuh) encouraged his disciples to make themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake.
This act of monasticism could not be taught by Prophet Jesus (pbuh) for the following reason:
- Jesus (pbuh) was a Messenger of Allah and he only taught what Allah commanded him to teach. The Qur'an states that monasticism was an invention and Allah did not ordain it.
- The result of this teaching is the extinction of humans or at least the extinction of the religious people who follow it.
- Celibacy is against human instincts. It suppresses sexual desires, which causes psychological problems and makes life miserable. This teaching made many Christians hate religion and prefer secular life.
In Islam, salvation is not achieved by the suffering of the body and the suppression of emotions. Islam forbids self-prescution and allows enjoying the pleasures of life while observing Allah's laws. These laws ensure that we get what is beneficial and avoid what is harmful. Islam encourages the Muslim to get married as soon as possible. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, "Whoever is able to marry, should marry." However, Islam prevents humans from descending to the level of animals. Therefore, It forbids adultery and prevents sexual practices which spread diseases, destroy the family, and harm the individual and the entire society.
